After 10 years of helping people quit smoking in Ireland, hypnotherapist and author Alex Peter Ivanov shares his approach to smoking cessation through a book combining daily reading, practical exercises, hypnosis-inspired techniques and guided meditations.
Rather than relying on fear, pressure or shocking imagery, his book, Journey to Permanent Non-Smoker, invites readers to approach quitting smoking gradually, one chapter at a time.
In this special Q&A, Alex discusses his professional experience, the inspiration behind his book and why personal motivation is such an important part of becoming smoke-free.

Q: Alex, could you tell our readers a little about yourself and your work in Ireland?
Alex: For the past 10 years, I’ve been helping people in Ireland overcome smoking through hypnotherapy.
Alex: I run Non Smoking Ireland, a website dedicated to supporting people who want to free themselves from smoking and begin a healthier chapter of their lives.
Alex: Over the years, I’ve met many people who genuinely want to quit but find it difficult to take that final step. My work is about helping them approach that change with greater confidence and a more positive mindset.
Q: You’ve written a book about quitting smoking. What inspired you to create it?
Alex: I wanted to make my experience and approach available to people who might not be ready for individual hypnotherapy sessions or who simply prefer working at their own pace.
Alex: That’s how Journey to Permanent Non-Smoker came about.
Alex: My goal was to create something practical, accessible and enjoyable. Not another frightening book about the dangers of smoking, but a gentle, structured journey towards becoming a non-smoker.
Q: What makes your book different from other stop-smoking books?
Alex: First of all, there’s no shock therapy. No frightening pictures, no pressure and no attempt to make people feel guilty.
Alex: The programme lasts 21 days, and readers only need to read one chapter each day. That usually takes just a few minutes.
Alex: The chapters are designed to introduce new ideas gradually, helping readers reflect on their smoking habits and develop a different relationship with cigarettes.
Alex: I wanted the process to feel manageable rather than overwhelming.
Q: Is it simply a book to read, or is there something more involved?
Alex: It’s much more than reading!
Alex: Each chapter includes practical exercises that encourage readers to participate actively in their own progress.
Alex: These exercises take only a few additional minutes, but they make the book an interactive programme rather than just a collection of information.
Alex: I also included illustrations, humour and little jokes along the way. Quitting smoking is a serious subject, of course, but that doesn’t mean the journey has to be miserable!
Alex: I wanted people to enjoy opening the book each day.
Q: You describe the book itself as hypnotic. How does that work?
Alex: This is one of the most unusual features of the book.
Alex: I’ve incorporated hypnosis-inspired language and relaxation techniques into its structure.
Alex: At the beginning of each chapter, there’s a gentle induction designed to help the reader relax and focus. The chapter then introduces suggestions and ideas connected with becoming a non-smoker.
Alex: At the end, there’s a closing sequence to bring the reader’s attention back to their normal surroundings.
Alex: It’s intended to create a calm, focused reading experience. Readers remain in control throughout.
Q: Does the book include audio support?
Alex: Yes, and I’m particularly pleased about that.
Alex: Readers receive access to guided hypnotic meditations at no additional cost.
Alex: Each week introduces a different meditation, designed to complement the reading and exercises.
Alex: And when readers complete the 21-day programme, there’s an additional meditation intended to support their ongoing commitment to remaining smoke-free.
Alex: I wanted the support to continue beyond the final page of the book.
Q: After 10 years of helping people quit smoking, can you guarantee success?
Alex: No, and I think it’s very important to be honest about that.
Alex: Nobody can responsibly guarantee that every person will stop smoking.
Alex: One of the most important ingredients is the person’s own motivation. They must genuinely want to make that change.
Alex: Hypnotherapy, guided exercises and positive suggestions can be useful forms of support, but they cannot replace personal willingness and commitment.
Alex: When someone is ready, motivated and receptive to the process, we have a much better foundation to work from.
Alex: Every person is different, and I always respect that.
Q: What would you say to someone who has tried to quit smoking before but hasn’t succeeded?
Alex: I would say that a previous unsuccessful attempt doesn’t mean you can’t succeed in the future.
Alex: Try not to judge yourself too harshly.
Alex: Instead, consider whether you might benefit from a different approach, additional support or a more manageable plan.
Alex: My book is designed to offer one possible route. Some people may prefer professional hypnotherapy, while others benefit from medical smoking-cessation services or a combination of support options.
Alex: The important thing is not to give up on the possibility of a healthier future.
Q: Where can people find your book?
Alex: The book is available on Amazon in digital and paperback formats.
Alex: People who enjoy reading electronically can choose the Kindle edition, while those who prefer a physical book can order the paperback.
Alex: You can find Journey to Permanent Non-Smoker here:
Alex: I’ve also published a detailed article explaining how the 21-day programme works, including the exercises, meditations and hypnotic reading techniques.

Q: And what if someone would prefer to work with you personally?
Alex: They’re very welcome to explore my website, Non Smoking Ireland.
Alex: It’s dedicated to helping people in Ireland who want to stop smoking and learn more about hypnotherapy as a possible form of support.
Alex: They can also find information about my services and book a personal hypnotherapy session.

Q: Finally, what message would you like to share with our readers?
Alex: Writing this book has been a very personal and rewarding experience.
Alex: After 10 years of helping people, it’s wonderful to have another way of sharing my knowledge and supporting those who want to change their lives.
Alex: I truly believe that positive change doesn’t always need to begin with fear or pressure. Sometimes it can begin with a few quiet minutes, a good book and a genuine decision to do something positive for yourself.
Alex: And remember, becoming a non-smoker isn’t only about your own health. It’s also about protecting your family, friends and loved ones from second-hand smoke.
Alex: If my book or my work helps even more people move towards a smoke-free life, that will bring me enormous satisfaction.
Alex: Take care of your health, believe in your ability to change, and take that first positive step.
