The expanded service means that all Irish citizens can now renew their passports online 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from anywhere in the world.
The cost of renewing passports online is €5 cheaper, with a turnaround time of ten working days for all online applications, excluding postage.
People renewing their passports online will need a digital photograph and email address.
For those renewing a child’s passport, a Child Passport Identity and Consent Form will have to be printed and witnessed at the end of the online process.
Applications for passport cards for children are now allowed too.
A standard adult passport online is €75, while a child’s passport is €20.
It is cheaper to apply for a passport book and card at the same time.
Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said the success of the online renewal service was recognised at the recent CX Impact Awards, where it won the ‘Impact in Digital’ award.
He said: “It is important that the Passport Service continues to use technology in order to gain efficiencies and deliver the best possible service to the citizen”.
