III Theater Festival of McDonagh in Perm – the Irish “landing” on the banks of the Kama!

Long time ago Perm became a place for different big events. Suchfamousfestivalsas «Dyagilevskiy», «KAMWA», festival ofdocumentary cinema «Flaertiana» take place here. In 2014 Permalso became a city for conducting the international festival of Martin McDonagh – an outstanding Irish playwright, film director and Oscar winner. It was at the initiative of the theater «U Mosta».

McDonagh is a publicly recognized master of modern dramatic art. He is popular all around the world. «A real sensation of Europe! The miracle of modern scene!  Tarantino from Theater! The Leading Playwright of the XXI Century!» – all these phrases are about McDonagh. His movies «Six Shooter», «In Bruges» and «Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri» are acknowledged in film industry and were rewarded with three “Oscar”, four “Golden Globe”, five “Bafta” from the British Film Academy and others.

Sergey Fedotov, a director of Perm theatre «U Mosta», was a pioneer in staging McDonagh’s plays. Due to it the festival will last for the third time from the 1st till the 7th of October 2018 under support of The Ministry of Culture of Perm Krai, the Culture Department of the Perm City Administration and the Union of Theater Workers of Russia. The first two festivals in 2014 and 2016 proved the interest of theatres to popularize the famous Irishman’s works. During the festival in 2014 performances from Poland, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, and Russia were presented. In addition to the contest Russian leading theatres showed their own performances: Moscow Art Theater of A. P. Chekhov «The Pillowman», The Moscow theater of Armen Dzhigarkhanyan, «The Beauty Queen of Leenane» and also Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater, «The Cripple of  Inishmaan». In the second festival some other countries such as Iran, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Serbia, Czech Republic, Montenegro, and Azerbaijan joined the list. Theatre «U Mosta» opened the second festival with premiere play «Hangmen». The most anticipated events were performances of the two famous theatres “Bardic” (Northern Ireland) and “Tron Theater” (Scotland). All in all during the two festivals 39 performances of 27 theaters from 15 countries were presented.

The third festival of M.McDonagh (1 – 7 October 2018) is devoted to 30th anniversary of Perm Theater “U Mosta” and promises to be even more extraordinary. There are new famous participants. Theatre ČINOHERNÍ KLUB, one of the most legendary European theatres, will present «Behanding In Spokane» and «Hangmen». It was Czech director Ondrej Sokol who discovered McDonagh’s  works. Romanian ACT Theater will show their version of the play «The Pillowman». The most popular play of this festival will be “The Lonesome West”, viewers will see six versions of it played by theaters from Moldova, Hungary, Iran, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia and Russia.

Stage versions of “The Beauty Queen of Leenane” will be presented to the fans of this play by ART-shelter “BUNKER” from Kazakhstan, the V. Savin Theatre from Syktyvkar, Drama Theatre from Sterlitamak. «National Institution Albanian Theatre Skopje» from Macedonia will show the premiere of «A Behanding in Spokane». Malé divadlo Praha will bring “A Skull in C.”. In addition, during the festival there will be workshops by directors and lectures by drama critics from Russia.

As usual, there will be a program rich for events. Traditionally during International Festival of M.McDonagh there are activities connected with Irish life: “parade of redheaded”, Irish dance evenings and «hot Irish dudes» in local pubs.

The Organizing Committee of the III International McDonagh Festival in Perm is waiting for the connoisseurs of  McDonagh’s works from all over the world and invites media representatives to cooperate. Press conferences and the possibility of exclusive interviews with directors and actors will be organized for journalists during the festival.Any spectator can take part in the discussion of performances and modern theater.
