Which Irish person’s life do you think would make a great subject for a historical novel? If you think you have the answer to this, Tweet their name and the reason why you think they would be a great subject for a historical novel in 140 characters or less to @HistFest by 1pm on Wednesday 25th September.
The prize is one of two tickets each worth €25 to a workshop on writing historical fiction with bestselling author Katharine McMahon. Katharine will also judge the competition. The event is part of the first Dublin Festival of History which runs from 26th September to 9th October, www.dublinfestivalofhistory.ie
“Entries can be based on the lives of famous or obscure historical personalities. Maybe you’d love to write a historical novel based on the life of O’Connell, Parnell or Markievicz or you know one of history’s unsung heroes who deserves to be brought to a new audience. Tell us in no more than 140 characters on Twitter”, says Tara Doyle, Senior Librarian with Dublin City Council’s Public libraries who is organising the festival.
The two winners will each receive free tickets to a master class with Katharine McMahon, author of bestselling historical fiction works including The Rose of Sebastapol and Season of Light at Dublin City Library and Archive, Pearse Street at 10.15am on Saturday 28th September.
The 2 ½ hour class will use historical sources and show how they can provide the spark for creating a story based on real historical events and characters.
The Dublin Festival of History features a stellar cast of Irish and international historians. These include Diarmuid Ferriter, Roy Hattersley, Simon Schama, Richard Overy and Jung Chang. Historical Walking Tours and a Local History Day on 5th October are just some of the other highlights on offer. All events except the historical fiction workshop are free but booking is required.
