The Russian flag was flying at St. Oliver’s Community College

It was a great honour to had as a visitor to St. Oliver’s Community College the Ambassador of the  Russian Federation His Excellency Yuri Anatolevich Filatov.

College was welcoming ambassador with traditional Russian greeting “bread and salt” and children were dressed in colourful traditional Russian dresses. The students were playing Russian anthem followed by the beautiful sound of Irish pipes. Our TY students prepared well-known Russian songs “Kalinka”.The ambassador was also enjoyed looking at the international exhibition “Children draw Peace” which were presented by the historical and cultural centre “Mobius” This exhibition contains around 300 children’s pictures from all over the world. The ambassador was pleased to find out that the Russian language has been taught at St. Oliver’s for 8 years as a Leaving Certificate subject and has been available for 3 years for TY students. TY students presented their projects about Russian Culture, Russian food, Famous Russian People. His Excellency Yuri Anatolevich participated in questions and answers session from our LC students. The official part of the visit was finished by the launch of the Russian Oral Work Book written by Oksana McNiff and published by Irene Gahan. St. Oliver’s College gave a gift to Russian ambassador. It was beautiful books about Drogheda. This was the first ever visit of the Russian ambassador to the state Irish schools and it was a great honour for us to welcome such an important guest.
