Elena Degtyareva: The dance of joy and hope

Elena Degtyareva is a Russian dancer, who, by an unusual twist of fate, now lives in Dublin. This woman stepped onto the stage in Uzbekistan for the first time at 7 years of age. At 23, she won the international competition “Best Dancer of the Year” in Ireland!

Even when Elena was a child, there were no doubts that her calling in life was dance. She said that once when she was about five years old, her parents took her to a restaurant where they played live music. The music made Elena overjoyed and she could not calm down! At that point, her parents sent her straight to the stage. “I danced all night, and at the end I was given a chocolate bar! That was my first award,” she said.

Elena’s parents strongly supported her passion for dancing: “At home I often danced for them,” she said. “With the use of a table lamp I made a light show. Mom had to sit through it. And when I walked down the street and heard music, I began to dance. My mother worked as director of a club. She decided I should take part in every party.”

Later, Helen graduated from the Ballet School in Tashkent, and after that, she went to an institute, while working in three theatres at the same time. From the age of 13, the talented dancer performed with the modern dance group “Theatre of Movement “(now -“Lik”). Together with the group she toured Europe and Asia. After working for some time in the Tashkent Operetta Theatre and the “Inspiration” Drama Theatre, Elena moved to London. There, she became a director of Russian-British theatre and participated in dance performances of “Through the shackles of sleep” and “Crime and Punishment.”

But she did not settle in London and moved on to Dublin. Now Elena has performed in concerts and conducts dance courses for people of all ages. The classes are attended not only by Irish people, but also Russian-speaking compatriots.

“I went through a lot in recent years,” says the dancer, “I think that experience gives one the opportunity to discover new facets to an art. In fact, the more a person learns, the richer her spiritual world. I would like craft to share joy and hope with people through my work.”
