{"id":31085,"date":"2026-05-09T16:00:49","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T15:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/russianireland.com\/irlandskij-sojuznik\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T11:24:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T10:24:34","slug":"irlandskij-sojuznik-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/russianireland.com\/en\/irlandskij-sojuznik-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish Ally"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Irishman George Reavey at the time of Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) lived in the USSR and was editor-in-chief of the frontline newspaper \u201cBritish Ally\u201d published in the Russian language.<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">George Reavey was born on 1<sup>st<\/sup> of May 2007 at Vitebsk (Belorussia). He was the only child of a Russian mother Sofia Turchenko and her Irish husband Daniel Reavey who was in the linen business in Lisburn Co. Antrim and left Ireland for Russia in 1894. From Vitebsk little George and his family moved to Nizhny Novgorod, which is where they were for the October revolution in 1917. The family was forced to move to London.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1929 George graduated from Cambridge having read English and history and moved to Paris. Here Reavey starting to translate Russian poets Esenin, Mayakovsky and Pasternak to English and became acquainted with Russian \u00e9migr\u00e9 writers such as Bunin, Berdyaev and Pasternak.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1942 the British Government sent Reavey back to Russia on a diplomatic mission. On this dangerous journey his ship was torpedoed and sank near Norway. Reavey was saved by Russian fishermen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the USSR Reavey was on orders to conduct quite a delicate mission. The Soviet Union was calling on Britain to open a western front against the Nazis as the Soviets suspected that Churchill was intentionally stalling in order to reduce the USSR\u2019s power and win the war with Russian soldiers\u2019 blood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-55596\" src=\"https:\/\/russianireland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/\u0411\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439-\u0421\u043e\u044e\u0437\u043d\u0438\u043a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"799\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/russianireland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/\u0411\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439-\u0421\u043e\u044e\u0437\u043d\u0438\u043a.jpg 799w, https:\/\/russianireland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/\u0411\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439-\u0421\u043e\u044e\u0437\u043d\u0438\u043a-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/russianireland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/\u0411\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439-\u0421\u043e\u044e\u0437\u043d\u0438\u043a-768x554.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px\" \/>To prove that Britain was a real ally Churchill\u2019s government decided to run a Russian language newspaper in Moscow called \u201cThe British Ally\u201d where George became the Editor-in- chief.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At this war time he became friends with Alexey Tolstoy, Samuil Marshak and Anna Ahmatova.
